LBFTA, Ministry of Tourism, and Divers Alert Network Strengthen Marine Tourism Safety Standards in Labuan Bajo
Labuan Bajo, April 14, 2026 —
Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority (LBFTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia and Divers Alert Network (DAN), officially launched the Marine Tourism Safety & Security Education Program in Labuan Bajo, taking place on April 14 and 16, 2026.
This initiative represents a strategic effort to strengthen the foundation of marine tourism safety in Labuan Bajo, amid the growing dynamics of high-risk tourism activities such as diving, snorkeling, and boat excursions. It also aligns with the ongoing transformation toward “Quality Tourism” (Pariwisata Naik Kelas), which emphasizes not only natural beauty but also safety and risk management standards.
Reflecting on recent challenges, including adverse weather conditions and operational risks, stakeholders recognize that maintaining Labuan Bajo’s reputation as a world-class destination requires more than promotion—it demands a robust and standardized safety framework.
The program aims to establish new standards for marine tourism human resources (HR), targeting at least 50 participants from various associations, including P3KOM, ASKAWI, and DOCK. Participants are expected to gain Emergency First Response (EFR) certification and comprehensive knowledge of risk management practices in marine tourism operations.
The Acting President Director of LBFTA, Andhy MT Marpaung, emphasized the importance of safety as a fundamental pillar of sustainable tourism.
“As a priority destination, we cannot rely solely on selling natural beauty without ensuring safety. Today, we gather to strengthen that foundation. We highly appreciate the presence of all tourism stakeholders who are at the frontline, interacting directly with visitors and the ocean every day,” he stated.
He further highlighted that safety should be seen as a long-term investment.
“Safety is an investment, not a cost. Through collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, LBFTA, Divers Alert Network, and all stakeholders, we aim to send a strong message to the world: Labuan Bajo is not only beautiful, but also safe and responsible,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Country Manager of DAN Indonesia, Bayu Wardoyo, reaffirmed DAN’s commitment to enhancing marine tourism safety standards in Indonesia.
“Labuan Bajo holds extraordinary potential as a world-class marine tourism destination. However, this potential must be supported by well-prepared human resources who fully understand safety principles. Through this program, we aim to ensure that every tourism operator is equipped with emergency response skills and a strong understanding of risk management,” he explained.
He also emphasized that continuous education and training are key to building a safe and professional marine tourism ecosystem.
This Marine Tourism Safety & Security Education Program is expected to serve as a milestone in strengthening national safety standards, positioning Labuan Bajo not only as a premier destination in terms of service and attractions, but also as a benchmark for marine tourism safety in Indonesia.
