The First Cinema in Flores is Coming to Labuan Bajo!
August 30th is a special day — I got the chance to be part of a historic moment in Labuan Bajo. Mawatu, together with Cinema XXI, officially started the groundbreaking for what will soon be the first-ever cinema in Flores.
The event was filled with excitement and hope. Deputy Regent of West Manggarai, Dr. Yulianus Weng, spoke with so much pride, saying this cinema has been long awaited by the community. He believes this will not only bring joy to locals but also attract visitors from across Flores.
Then, Haryanto Kurniawan, Director of Mawatu from Vasanta Group, shared how this cinema will complete the vibe of Mawatu — alongside the commercial village and beach club. Truly, Mawatu is shaping up to be more than just a place, but an experience.
From the Cinema XXI side, David Sadeli, Head of Business Development, said they’re super grateful to be part of Labuan Bajo’s growth. He’s optimistic this project will be well-received and hopes it can expand in the future with more studios.
And of course, our Acting President Director of LBFTA, Mr. Dwi Marhen Yono, expressed his support, pointing out how this cinema aligns with Labuan Bajo’s larger vision as a super-priority destination. This cinema not only adds amenities but also has the potential to encourage the growth of other investments, including local MSMEs already present in the Mawatu area. Thus, Labuan Bajo tourism will not only rely on activities at sea (maritime attraction e.g sailing and diving), but can also be spread across land (mainland).
For me personally, standing there with a camera in hand, I couldn’t help but think: Wow, this is really happening. Labuan Bajo is often known for its islands, diving spots, and Komodo dragons, but now, we’re adding a modern cultural touchpoint — a cinema! Imagine tourists enjoying a day at sea and then winding down with a movie in Mawatu, and then enjoying local food by the beach. That’s next-level tourism.
This project isn’t just about building a cinema. It’s about giving Labuan Bajo — and Flores Island — something new to be proud of.
