Ritual Ceremony for Manggarai Barat 23rd Anniversary: Preserving Cultural Roots Amid Tourism Growth

On February 24, 2026, the Hall of the Regent’s Office of West Manggarai became a space of reflection, gratitude, and unity as the community gathered to commemorate the HUT Manggarai Barat (23rd Anniversary of West Manggarai Regency) through a traditional ritual ceremony.

More than a formal celebration, this cultural ritual served as a reminder that development must remain rooted in identity. As someone working in public communication at Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority, witnessing this moment reaffirmed an important truth: sustainable progress begins with cultural awareness.

The Meaning Behind the Ritual Ceremony

In the context of the HUT Manggarai Barat, the traditional ritual was not merely symbolic. It represented gratitude to God Almighty and respect for the ancestors who laid the foundations of today’s West Manggarai. It also reflected collective hope for harmony, prosperity, and resilience as the region continues to grow.

At 23 years old, West Manggarai stands at a dynamic crossroads — recognized globally through Labuan Bajo while remaining deeply connected to its indigenous heritage. The ritual embodied this balance between honoring the past and shaping the future.

Culture as the Soul of Tourism

During the ceremony, Acting President Director of BPOLBF, Andhy MT Marpaung, emphasized the importance of safeguarding cultural values amid rapid tourism development.

“This ritual is not merely ceremonial. It is a form of respect for the cultural roots that define Manggarai Barat. In tourism development, local wisdom is the soul of the destination and must be preserved collectively.”

His statement resonates strongly in today’s context. Labuan Bajo has become an international gateway, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Yet, what truly differentiates the destination is not only its natural beauty — such as Komodo National Park — but also the authenticity of its traditions, community values, and cultural expressions.

Leadership Message: Development with Identity

Regent of West Manggarai, Edistasius Endi, S.E., also underscored that progress should never detach from cultural foundations.

“Through this traditional ritual, we are reminded that development must not be disconnected from cultural values and local wisdom. Unity, mutual cooperation, and respect for tradition are the true strengths of West Manggarai as we move forward.”

His message framed the anniversary not only as celebration, but as evaluation and recommitment.

Reflecting on 23 Years of West Manggarai

The 23rd anniversary — or dirgahayu manggarai barat — marks more than two decades of regional autonomy, transformation, and opportunity. Tourism has become a primary growth engine, bringing investment, infrastructure, and global visibility.

However, growth also brings responsibility: improving governance, strengthening human resources, ensuring environmental sustainability, and maintaining cultural integrity.

The ritual ceremony reminded everyone present that long-term success lies in balance — between modernization and tradition, economic expansion and social cohesion.

As West Manggarai continues its journey, may its cultural roots remain strong, its tourism sector sustainable, and its community united in purpose.

Dirgahayu Manggarai Barat.
May culture remain its foundation, and progress its shared direction.
